SERI has released the latest draft of R2v3, The Next Evolution of the R2 Standard.

R2 has seen two prior iterations, R2:2008 and R2:2013 (the current version of the Standard).  Both of these share the same intent as R2v3, to require best practices for safe and sustainable reuse and recycling of electronic equipment, components and materials.  The proposed draft of R2v3 organizes many of the familiar requirements from R2:2013 into Core Requirements (applicable to all R2 facilities) and specialized Process Requirements (additional requirements applicable only to R2 facilities that perform specific processes).

The Core Requirement Areas are:

  1. Scope
  2. Hierarchy of Responsible Management Strategies
  3. EH&S Management System
  4. Legal and Other Requirements
  5. Tracking Throughput
  6. Sorting, Categorization and Processing
  7. Data Security
  8. Focus Materials
  9. Facility Requirements
  10. Transport

Process Requirements Include:
  • Downstream Recycling Chain
  • Data Sanitization
  • Test and Repair
  • Specialty Electronics
  • Materials Recovery
  • Brokering
