If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?
EHS Today recently published an article in which they asked safety leaders across the EHS community a simple question - "If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?". The answers weren't what you might think. While there were the usual answers like more pay, better work/life balance, etc. most of the answers reported centralized around streamlining and simplifying EHS compliance administrative tasks.
And the results were (drumroll please...)
The results of the survey yielded a variety of answers (more of which can be seen in the article), however, the central theme that was prevalent throughout the comments was that EHS managers are expected to do alot of work - don't have enough time to do it in, and feel a lack of support at a company-wide level due to a lack of engagement.
- Additional EHS Staff / An EHS assistant at each facility
- Spend more time out in the facility instead of writing policies and paperwork.
- Get relieved of quality duties so I can focus more on safety.
- More time for training.
- Not to wear so many hats.
- Better communication between all departments.
- Upgrading to software apps for reporting and for follow-ups.
- To decrease the level of cynicism that some employees hold towards EHS in general.
- Have leadership more actively engaged with employees about safety programs and activities to demonstrate support and ownership.
Using EHS Software to address the themes presented
EHS leaders have identified three core needs:
- More Time
- More Engagement
- Less Paperwork and Follow-Up
